How to Test Source Visibility in Perplexity
No page change can ensure that Perplexity will display a source. Use a fixed test protocol and improve pages for readers rather than presenting a guessed citation formula.
Steps 1–2: define and capture
- Choose specific informational questions connected to useful pages.
- Save exact prompts, complete responses, displayed links, date, region, account state, and mode.
Steps 3–4: check the source page
- Verify public access, successful status, intended canonical, visible text, and working internal links.
- Check that the page directly answers the question, qualifies its scope, dates volatile facts, and cites primary evidence.
Steps 5–6: compare and revise
Inspect displayed sources for the sampled responses using explicit criteria such as directness, evidence, and update status. Revise a bounded group of pages where the reader experience is genuinely deficient; do not copy another publisher or infer hidden weighting.
Step 7: repeat and report
Repeat the frozen sample on a scheduled date. Report source appearances as a count over the tested responses, retain contradictory runs, and log unrelated site or platform changes.
